The introduction of increasingly electronic, rather than mechanical, components into cars has undoubtedly made the work of repairers more complex. Higher levels of expertise and increasingly specialized equipment have become essential for proper diagnosis and subsequent replacement/repair of parts. The electric steering system is no exception in the steering sector. A direct descendant of the mechanical gearbox and power steering, the electric steering system has abandoned the assistance of the steering column or hydraulic/electro-hydraulic pump, instead featuring a mechanical component and an electronic motor that enables assisted steering. Depros, which has also been at the forefront of the steering sector for over 20 years, has obviously not remained deaf to the calls of technological innovation, and has therefore taken it upon itself to acquire the necessary know-how and specific equipment to handle this type of repair as well.

What are the main causes of electro-assist failure?

The causes of electric steering failure can be grouped into two main areas: mechanical failure and electronic failure. Mechanical failure: This type of failure is generally related to wear/damage to the bushings on the rack rod. This defect causes an annoying metal-on-metal noise, especially when the vehicle is driven on rough roads. Over time, the bushings have been replaced with ball bearings, which, however, can lead to similar problems. Equally common is mechanical failure due to oxidation of the rack rod or wear of its “teeth.” Electronic failure: This type of failure is even more complex because it involves the configurations required on the vehicle after replacement. First and foremost, electronic failure occurs due to wear of the electrical components as well as damage caused by water and/or humidity. It’s important to keep in mind that, once the repair has been commissioned and completed, a configuration intervention is often necessary that cannot be performed by anyone other than the dealership. Unfortunately, without this crucial step, irreversible malfunctions can occur, and it’s important to work with a receptive dealership that is willing to resolve the issue using the equipment provided.

The magic formula for a quality repair!

As mentioned, equipment and skills play a fundamental role, especially when repairing this part.
