Is an electronic actuator available for the Mercedes turbocharger?
This is typically the request made when a repair shop’s diagnostic tool reports a malfunction with the turbo actuator.
This request is very, very generic, and we’ll explain why later.
The Electronic Actuator essentially consists of a mechanical part and an electrical part. The electrical part controls the movements of the mechanical part, which, via an “arm,” is anchored to the Variable Geometry.
We can immediately state that:
The Actuator is “UNIQUE” and irreplaceable for every turbocharger.
Does this mean that the turbo actuator cannot be replaced? In some ways, yes.
Below, we will try to clarify some aspects, summarizing complex information, to provide a better understanding of this issue.
Preface: Why an Electric or Electronic Actuator? What is its purpose?
It modulates the opening and closing of the Variable Geometry blades upon engine demand.
The Electronic Actuator, unlike its predecessors, represents a significant step forward in optimizing communication between the engine and the turbocharger, making it possible to achieve previously unattained goals in terms of emissions, fuel economy, torque, power, and performance.
It is important to note that there are various types of Electric Actuators, the most common of which are those manufactured by Hella, most commonly mounted on Garrett turbochargers. They are divided into two categories: “REA” (Rotary Electronic Actuator) and “SREA” (Simple Rotary Electronic Actuator).
The latter, “SREA,” cannot currently be programmed, unlike the former, “REA,” which can be programmed with a special tool.
We said “UNIQUE” – Yes, because, despite being very similar, sometimes even aesthetically identical, they are substantially different both mechanically (in height, length, and arm angle) and electronically, as each component contains information specific to a specific turbo code.
Just consider that simply removing the actuator using the three screws that anchor it to the turbo, due to the existing tolerance (or play) between the screws and holes, nullifies and falsifies this “UNIQUE Calibration.”
Therefore, if the actuator needs to be disassembled for replacement or repair, it would need to be “Recalibrated” with special equipment by specialized technicians.
That’s why it’s “UNIQUE”!!!
It’s easy to understand why the question “Is an actuator available for the Mercedes turbo?” seems very generic, approximate, and therefore unanswerable.
Nowadays, the aftermarket has begun to timidly sell a few actuators as spare parts. As a result of the above, it’s best to first ensure the product’s excellent workmanship and quality by choosing a reputable company. Once you’ve purchased the part, turn to competent professionals—Turbo Professionals—who have the technical tools and expertise to perform the job.
DEPROS offers a wide range of turbocharger actuators, including pneumatic, electro-pneumatic, and electronic actuators. We offer our expertise to find the right solution for every professional, whether they’re car repairers, auto parts dealers, or turbo professionals.
