The 753420-5005S and 49173-07506 turbochargers, typically used on PSA 1.6 HDi engines, require special care to ensure effective replacement and prevent premature failure.

Preliminary information

The PSA 1.6 HDi engine is designed to operate at high temperatures, requiring the use of the highest quality lubricants. To maintain this engine in optimal condition, an oil filter and an integrated heat exchanger have been installed on the turbocharger’s oil inlet pipe. This configuration has a disadvantage. In some cases, it has been observed that an engine left to run with the oil level below normal limits tends to significantly increase the carbon concentration in the oil. This abnormal concentration level can lead to clogging of the inlet pipe filter, as well as the oil cooler and main oil filter. All of this leads to premature failure of the turbocharger. Experience to date suggests that carbon deposits in this application are particularly difficult to remove.

Tips for the Installer

To minimize the risk of further turbo failure, the following tips should be carefully considered by the installer:
  • The oil inlet pipe, fittings, and filters on the fittings must be replaced.
  • The oil pump and its connected filter must be removed and thoroughly cleaned.
  • The oil cooler and filter device must be removed and cleaned.
  • Check the engine injector seals for burnt or damaged seals and replace them if necessary.
Finally, the oil flow must be checked as follows:
  • Option 1: Place the turbocharger on the engine, leaving the oil return pipe disconnected.
  • Option 2: Install a longer oil return pipe to check the oil flow into a separate container. Start the engine and let it idle for 60 seconds, then turn it off.
  • Option 3: Measure the oil volume in the container, which should be at least 0.3 liters.
Repeat the test two or three times to verify accuracy. Finally, it is recommended to drive 40/50 km and replace the oil filter again. NOTE: Even after the above steps, there is no guarantee that all carbon residue inside the engine will be removed.
